Denmark - General Information
Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprised of the Jutland peninsula and offshore islands with Danish being the primary language spoken. It links Scandinavia and Northern Europe via the Oresund Bridge. Denmark's capital is Copenhagen and is the most populated city in Denmark. Copenhagen has been called the "coolest kid" on the Nordic block with its wide range of entertainment, culture, and shopping.
Denmark is famous for the Tivoli Gardens, the hometown of Hans Christian Anderson's house in Funen Village and the medieval core of cobblestone streets and half-timbered housing. There are many palaces in Denmark as well, including that of Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.
Denmark has four predictable seasons, warm summer days, colorful autumns, green springs, and winters with plenty of snow. However, it does get its fair share of rain. They say that it rains every second day, so a light rain jacket or umbrella may be a good idea to take along on your trip.
Traditional foods include the smorrebrod, which is an open-faced sandwich usually containing cold cuts, fish, meats, various pastes such as liver, salad dressings, cheese and served on buttered rye bread. Other common foods are caramelized potatoes, herring, butter cookies and of course the Danish pastry. This is usually made of flaky dough with fruit fillings and icing. Very delicious! Danes also enjoy salty licorice with a cold glass of milk.
The United Nations' World Happiness Report has rated the Danes first for the happiest people on earth many times, and sometimes for consecutive years. Many famous people are from Denmark, including Viggo Mortensen from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, model Helena Christensen, and of course Hans Christian Andersen, said to be the most famous Dane of all time.
